About Us
Adirondack Save‑A‑Stray is a privately run, nonprofit 501(c)(3) animal shelter and rescue founded in 1983 with one simple mission: to save lives and create loving, lasting, forever families. Every animal who comes through our doors is treated with dignity, compassion, and the belief that they deserve a safe, joyful future. We go to extraordinary lengths to match each pet with a responsible, stable, and deeply loving home.
How Our Story Began
Adirondack Save‑A‑Stray started humbly in a small storefront in Corinth. Our founder, Meredith Fiel, moved from Long Island to open an antique shop and settle into life on a farm. What she didn’t expect was that her farm would quickly become a drop‑off point for abandoned animals. Soon, customers joked that if you bought an antique, a cat came with it. But Meredith saw something deeper—a community need that could not be ignored. She became an advocate, a voice for the voiceless, and Adirondack Save‑A‑Stray was born.
A Legacy of Lives Saved
Over the past 35+ years, more than 60,000 animals have found safety, healing, and loving homes through our shelter. We are not a typical shelter. We operate as an open‑concept, cage‑free environment whenever possible. This is their temporary home, and we treat them like family from the moment they arrive.
The Reality We Face
While spaying and neutering have reduced the number of homeless pets in the Northeast, the crisis in southern states remains devastating. High‑kill shelters in Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana, Texas, and others euthanize animals after as little as a three‑day hold. Over 1.5 million animals are euthanized each year—many of them healthy, loving pets who simply ran out of time.
Every day, thousands of dogs and cats are abandoned in parking lots, left by dumpsters, or surrendered to overcrowded shelters. Black dogs, in particular, are often overlooked and among the first to be euthanized. We receive hundreds of emails every week—urgent, heartbreaking pleas asking us to save just one more life.
We work tirelessly with shelters up and down the East Coast and throughout the South to pull animals from death row and give them their “freedom ride” to safety.

How We Survive
Adirondack Save‑A‑Stray receives no local, state, or federal funding. We survive solely on adoption fees, program fees, and the generosity of people who believe in our mission.
Every adoption fee helps cover:
-
Pull fees from originating shelters
-
Veterinary care
-
Support for foster families
-
Transportation
-
Daily shelter operations
Saving lives is beautiful—but it is also expensive.
